Back in May I posted a list of the movies I wanted to see this year. So far I’ve seen 7 out of the 10 I was shooting for, plus caught up on 2 that I had missed once they came out on DVD. Not too bad. I’m pretty sure I’ve reviewed them all on here after seeing them.
There are a few on that list that haven’t come out yet, and there are some new trailers out that have caught my interest for the rest of this year. So I figured an updated list is due (and really, I need another excuse to watch some trailers – and so do you).
Contagion – I had listed this as a possibility before, and I think letting it wait for DVD is the right decision. It does look good, but for some reason I wasn’t feeling the “I gotta see it” pull. The trailer just didn’t push my buttons, I guess.
The Three Musketeers – this opened yesterday. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I don’t think I want to make a special effort to see it in the theater. As much as I LOVE the swordplay flicks, this strikes me as the Musketeers patterned after Pirates of the Caribbean, which doesn’t work for me. It’s just slightly over-the-top. I will be catching it on DVD – though if someone offers to make it possible in the theater, I’m sure I could be persuaded (I only want to see the 2-D version, though).
The Muppets – There have been a lot of parody trailers out, but now we finally have an official one. I think it looks like a winner. It does give me pause that they’re featuring a certain Cee Lo song so prominently (even though I love the song, I’m not sure it’s appropriate here), but I’m trusting them to get it right. As usual it looks like a host of cameos and a host of characters. I really want to get out to see this one with the whole family.
On a related note, I’d also like to catch this documentary on the guy behind Elmo at some point. Looks really interesting.
In Time – This just looks cool. I really want to see this one in the theater. I’m not sure I’ll make it, but it looks worth the effort.
Tower Heist – This just looks hilarious. I really want to see it in the theater. It’s been forever since a comedy has looked good enough for me to see in the theater. From the trailer, this one fits the bill.
Hugo – This looks like an excellent holiday family film. Heartwarming and all that, with some great kids’ fantasy done right. The child actors look like they can carry it, too.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy – This looks very good as well. Odds are I won’t see it in the theater, but I wouldn’t mind.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – Absolutely yes, I want to see this in the theater. It will be a visual and audio treat, and looks to have a fun story as well. Gotta see it.
And then we come to the big day of the year… December 21st. Three big movies are released that day, and the odds are I’m only going to see one of them. If I can stretch it to two by the end of the year, I’ll be satisfied.
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn – Steven Speilberg and Peter Jackson bringing some classic stories to life with a first draft written by Stephen Moffat (Doctor Who writer/showrunner). If I had no other information I’d still be interested. With this trailer, I’m absolutely sold, and I think my kids might like it too. This is the one I will see.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol – MI2 let me down, but MI3 was pretty good. This one looks to continue the upward trend. I’d love to see it in the theater. This is my #2 spot for the day.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – I’ve heard a lot of praise for the book, and the movie looks excellent. If I could hit a triple-feature I’d see this one, too, but my guess is that this will end up on DVD for me. Annoying, but you gotta give up at some point.
So here we are, back up to 10 movies again, and that’s only 1/4th of the year. I had 10 picked for the entire year before. Something tells me I’m going to miss a few of these.
What do you think of this list? Did I miss anything awesome? What are your must-see movies for the rest of 2011?
